It was considered for a long time that only dirt bags listen to rock and roll, only burn outs can like such music. And look at how things are today? Elvis is the king of Rock and Roll and people praise his music but back in his days he was considered a wacko, a crazy person. His videos were edited so that when they appeared on television you weren’t supposed to se him from the waist down because of the “outrageous” dance he preformed. A few years after that, “the twist” became one of the most popular dances around young people.
Rock and roll has evolved during the years and no matter the form it took people still considered it evil music that manipulated their children into doing bad stuff. It is true that some kids did some very wrong deeds after listening to rock and roll but that is only because they were just too simple and couldn’t understand the real message of rock music: live free and don’t let yourself be trampled on. Rock was always a musical genre with a mission. It was sung by people who had problems in life and music was the only way to get all the bad out of their souls. And the main audience of rock music is made out of kids with the same problems, kids that come from broken homes, kids that have something to relate to. Classic rock and early heavy metal lyrics talked exactly about how they went through the same problems as the kids who listened to their music did. When you feel that you belong to something bigger that your own, that the people that sing to you won’t judge your for having long hair or dressing a certain way it makes you feel safe and then you have your own safe haven. The people that listen to rock and roll are people who need someone or something to stop judging them for how they look and understand that they are people as well. These are generally outcasts of the society that have created their own society with the rest of rock and rollers.
It doesn’t matter if you like Elvis, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath or Metallica, the message is still the same: “we’ve been there too and we understand you”. This is why rock and roll is probably the music of those people who you would probably not hang out with but the truth is, people who listen to rock don’t really care what others think of them. These are the ones who like rock music for real.
